Acknowledging the importance of school counsellors in shaping the young minds of future generations, PETRONAS organised the '2008 PETRONAS School Counsellor Seminar' on 10-12 December at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in Perak.

About 200 school teachers from East and West Malaysia participated in the event.

Organised by the Education Sponsorship Unit, in collaboration with UTP and PETROSAINS, the seminar was aimed at refreshing the counsellors' skills; to instill passion in the field and to stress on the importance of their roles in schools. The seminar also aimed to expose the counsellors to the latest evolvement in counselling practices, enlighten them on the education and career opportunities which PETRONAS offers as well as enhance ties between the corporate sector and the schools.

The event was officiated by Datuk Dr Rosti Saruwono, PETRONAS Vice President of Education Division.

In his speech, Datuk Dr Rosti pointed out the role and challenges of school counsellors such as shaping the young minds and playing multi-faceted roles as guide, model, consultant, learning facilitator, career counsellor and Educator.

Datuk Dr Rosti also stressed that students must be instilled with moral, religious and spiritual values, life skills and interpersonal skills in order to face challenges. He also reiterated that school children need to be exposed to Information Technology and become savvy in this area.

According to one participant, the seminar had enabled her to network and share knowledge with other counsellors, while enhancing her own counselling skills. Another participant also shared this sentiment, adding that she hoped PETRONAS would organise more of such seminars.

Among those who gave a talk during the seminar were Encik Idris Ibrahim, General Manager, Exploration CTE, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd.
